I'm looking into the bicycle trip odometer idea, but for now I'm using a digital voice recorder keychain and speaking my odometer reading in it at fill up. I go 90-100 miles. This could be a problem on long trips, where you can't stop to hear the mileage.

...and please tell me that you hit your reserve before pushing. I run out and hit reserve, which gives me plenty of gas to get to a station.
